Austrian World Heritage Railway

The Semmering railway is the first railway in the first railway in the world which has been given the honour of World Heritage site. Build in 1850’s the Semmering Railway is Europe’s first mountain railway. It is built on Standard Gauge track and runs on the most difficult terrain of Europe.

The Railway is commemorated with two stamps, both issued by Republic of Austria. The 2001 issue is a joint issue by Austrian Republic and UNESCO that comes with the value of 35 Austrian Schilling depicting the mountainous landscape with a railway bridge in the middle.

The other stamp is a recent one. Released in Sept2015, the stamp depicts the image of a beautiful steam engine.
